Freeway Access Study Underway to Evaluate Access to East Lansing-Clinton County Area

NEWS

The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (Tri-County) is conducting a study to analyze alternatives for improving access to the northern East Lansing/southern Clinton County area and the surrounding local road and freeway systems.

Specifically, the study is investigating options that are available in the area to expand multi-modal access and improve connectivity to the freeway network to facilitate future economic expansion and accommodate regional growth and development in this part of the region. The study will examine current transportation needs and changing travel patterns, including road connections and access alternatives, traffic operations and safety, bike and pedestrian circulation, and transit service.

Tri-County has contracted with The Corradino Group to coordinate the development of the study, which will include conducting various analyses and supporting public engagement. Tri-County is currently in the initial phase of the study and the project team is completing a comprehensive review of existing transportation, economic, and land use conditions, as well as previous regional and local planning efforts impacting the area.

As the study is developed, the community will be invited to learn about these conditions, identify issues in and ideas for the area, and provide feedback and preferences regarding access alternatives. At this time, the public and stakeholders have the opportunity to attend an open house on March 25th and take a brief online survey to share their input. The survey includes an interactive map that enables participants to mark where they have safety concerns, congestion and access issues, or ideas for improvements.

This project is supported by a technical advisory committee comprised of representatives from the Clinton County Road Commission, cities of East Lansing and DeWitt, Bath and DeWitt townships, Capital Area Transportation Authority, Michigan Department of Transportation’s University Region and Lansing Transportation Service Center, and Tri-County. It is anticipated to be completed in early 2026.
